Most women I know want to lose weight and be able to keep it off. This is the easy part. The hard part is HOW. And beyond weight-loss, pursuing a healthy lifestyle is key to successful careers and businesses.
I’ve always been on the lean side, and so it was an absolute shock to my system after I had my first baby when a few months down the line I saw how much bigger I was. Like 3-4 sizes bigger. This began a somewhat half-hearted attempt to ‘lose the baby weight.’ Strange diets, strange techniques – I was desperate because I did not feel good about myself.
The good news is, it took a few years, but I’ve been able to lose weight, and just work toward a healthier lifestyle. And this post will show you exactly how I did that.
1. LOVE YOURSELF, AT ANY WEIGHT
I know this may seem too simple, but for real, appreciate and accept yourself, ALL of you, right where you are. Because truth is, if you can’t love yourself at 90kg, you will not love yourself at 50kg. Right now, just as you are, you are beautiful, you are smart, you are enough, don’t wait to reach weight x to start appreciating yourself. It was only when I started seeing myself this way that a shift happened for me. What you focus on grows, so instead of telling yourself negative things about your weight, tell yourself the positive and the good, and it shall come to pass.
2. REALIZE THAT THERE’S NO MAGIC
If there’s a someone selling you a diet or magic portion promising that you’ll lose weight just like that, know that they are selling you dreams my friend. Unfortunately there are no shortcuts, and you can’t drink your way to a healthy life. It take effort, at least if the change is going to be long-lasting. I remember I went to some place where you’d go twice a week, and they put some electromagnetic things and you went on a crazy diet of soup and a carrot. Gosh, I laugh looking back at that, and that I actually fell for it!
3. REMOVE TEMPTATION
Do an audit of your pantry and fridge, what all is in there? People are driven by what’s easy, so if you are hungry, and all that there is to eat is junk, then junk is what you are going to eat. And I’ve seen it with my family too. If we have chips and fizzys in the house, that’s what we’ll eat. So I don’t buy those, instead, I buy fruits and veggies, and the other stuff are treats for special days.
4. FIND AN ACTIVITY THAT YOU ENJOY
I’ll confess, I don’t enjoy working out. And for years I struggled because I was trying to mold myself into what I wasn’t. Until I thought, the goal is to get the heart pumping, and to be active. So why shouldn’t this be enjoyable? I love to dance, so I started doing Zumba, and fell in love! So find an activity that you enjoy – walking, cycling, swimming etc, and do it! I’ve added yoga to the mix because I just love the flexibility and centeredness I feel after doing it.
5. FIND EXPERTS AND ASK THEM TO TAILOR YOUR WORKOUTS
There are a thousand ways to go about working out, but you also want to find a program that will target your problem areas and ensure that you get the best out of your workouts. And thing is, if you do the wrong types of exercises, sometimes you’ll end up with unceseccary injuries. For example, I have diastasis recti (a condition where tummy muscles separate and don’t come back together), and when it was bad you could put a fist in in my tummy. But with the right exercises, mostly from Pilates, the muscles have come together. So find experts and if you can, tailor your workouts around your needs.
6. BE CONSISTENT
This is where most people miss it. You cannot an activity for a month and give up saying it doesn’t work. Research has shown that you need at least 90 days for a habit to stick, so don’t jump from banting to whole 30 to whatever else diet. The goal is to lead to a lifestyle, not a destination.
This one played a HUGE role in my transformation. I started a Facebook group and added like-minded people that encouraged me for 2years, and I did the same for them. So find like-minded people and hold hands with them.
So that’s it from me, do you have other habits that have worked for you? Share in comments below!
