Emily DeKleer is an incredible woman that I had the pleasure of meeting a few months ago. She is a great example for me of working a home-based business, and her ‘can do’ attitude has been one of the things that kept me going when I’ve wanted to quit. She earned her paid for Cadillac and hit her goal rank within 6months, but before that, she had struggled in another business that she eventually shut down. Find out how she manages to achieve her goals even with all the obstacles.
1. Please introduce yourself.
Hey everyone! My name is Emily deKleer. I’ve been married to my hard-working husband Brian for almost eight years. We have two fantastic sons. Travis is 4.5 and Hunter is 2.5 they are sunshines – and FULL of energy! We just adopted a Black Lab puppy last month. He fits right in with our family! I love trying new things, and now meeting so many new women… even though I am more of an introvert.
2. What does your daily routine look like?
I wake up when my sons do, which is anywhere from 5-6am. I get them feed and happy (and the puppy now too!), and then I make myself a cup of coffee. I sit down for one hour (on the couch with my sons), and get to work. I have my iPhone, agenda, and other necessities. I work for 1 hour, focusing on my daily to-do list.
Then, I get us all ready to start the day! Typical stay-at-home mom life after that. Then in the evening, after I put the boys to bed, I will sit down (again on the couch) for 1 hour to reply to messages, and get any other business tasks completed. Then, I relax with my husband.
3. How did you end up in the business that you are in now?
I guess you could say I have always been drawn to being my own boss. In February 2012 I purchased a tanning salon for a $30,000 loan. I wanted to grow the business to a point where I could have money coming home every month, while a manager ran the business for me. Sounds amazing right?!
Not so much. I ended up working there 40-60 hours a week, growing the business 20% year over year; yet, I still brought home $0 each month. I worked 3.5 years for free. Praise God I was able to get out of the iron-clad lease! Even lawyers said that was ‘impossible’ to do. But I had faith.
I promised to NEVER start another business again. I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom to my son (who was 1 year old when I closed down the salon). For 2 years I was a stay-at-home mom – LOVED it! And still DO!
After the birth of my second son in 2016, I experienced my second round of extreme postpartum hair loss. My temples were completely bald, and my hair was SO thin all over. Even my toddler was saying ‘Mummy’s hair is everywhere!’… yep, it was falling out all over the house! So, I decided to look for a naturally-based shampoo that would actually help restore my hair. I was tired of using products I knew were filled with harsh chemicals… and I figured SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE must have invented a naturally-based shampoo that would actually work to get ALL my hair back.
I asked my friends, family, and hairdresser if they knew of a product like this. Everyone said none existed. But I didn’t take NO for an answer. I ended up finding the company online. I saw the products were clinically-proven and backed by science… so I knew I was going to use the products!
But then I figured out it was a direct sales company. I figured… ‘If I love this shampoo, I will for sure be telling everyone. Just as I did when I bought a new vacuum that I loved (and still do!)’. So, I dove right in and started a business! Without even trying the products first (I saw it was a 30-day money back guarantee, no monthly fees, etc… so I was able to explain to my husband how this was NO RISK). It was the opposite of everything that was a massive burden with my salon.
4. What has your home business done for you and your family
My home business has proved a whole extra income stream, to relieve any financial strains. Plus, it has given me an outlet to do something for myself besides mom-life. I love the community of women, uplifting each other each and every day! It’s something I didn’t know I needed, but I now cherish.
5. What was your biggest aha moment in the journey?
I have two aha moments.
One was with the salon business that I brought forward to this online business. Believing in yourself, and having faith, can take you ANYWHERE. When you truly believe you can achieve anything you set your mind too, get to work, you can climb out of the lowest valley, and up to the highest mountain!
My second aha moment was just recently. Within the last few months. When I first started this business, I had a BIG long term 5-year goal of reaching a certain rank/pay level in the company. I achieved that goal in 6 months. That was amazing! But, since I achieved it so fast… I almost felt frozen.
Well, now what?! People were telling me to dream BIGGER and to run to the next rank. But self-doubt started to creep in. Did I deserve that monthly pay level? Who was I to think that could ever happen to me? People around me started to drop ‘subtle’ hints about how they believe too much money is bad (funny… they were saying the opposite just months prior when I earned nothing). I let those negative thoughts creep in.
Until someone told me on a business trip to Calgary, how much of a positive impact they were making in their communities now BECAUSE they had all this extra money. That earning more just MAGNIFIES who you truly are. Are you a giver? Then you will have more TIME and more MONEY to be able to give.
Then over the summer, I met someone else, and they were talking about how they use their success as a stage to positively impact the world (in big ways!!). My goal now is to not set limits on myself – so that I can positively impact my community and beyond, in more ways than I could have ever dreamed!
6. How do you stay consistent and motivated?
I have a strong WHY. It’s corny to say – but it actually does make me cry even thinking of it. That’s how powerful it is to me. My husband and sons are my world. I believe we can impact the world in a big way… if I continue to push fear aside daily and take ACTION.
7. What is one habit that has helped you become successful?
I am SO consistent with working my business for one hour in the morning, and one in the evening. Some days I do more – of course! I LOVE this business! It’s a PASSION. Those hours don’t even feel like work. And they ARE a habit. But, recently I have been able to work my business in those set times and have the rest of my day free to be with my sons and take them to so many fun activities!!
8. If I was to read one book to grow my business, what book would you recommend?
The Business School For People Who Like Helping People by Robert Kiyosaki
I have read it 3-4 times. And want to dive into it again! I have read SO MANY books, during the past 1.5 years. I am always learning and growing. That is so important.
But remember, IMPLEMENT what you learn… otherwise, reading it was a waste of time.
9. What are some of your favourite apps and tools you use daily to grow your business?
Funny thing… I actually had NO Apps on my iPhone prior to starting this business. I used it for phone calls and texts!
But now I have a handful (and that’s it).
And sometimes my boys ask for me to download a Peppa Pig game while we are at a restaurant or doctor’s office.
10. If you had to start all over again and knew no one, what is the first thing you would do to grow business from scratch?
I would for sure create a Facebook account and just start making friends! Real, genuine friendships. As a stay-at-home mom, I find it’s hard to get together in person with so many new people – but we can stay connected online so easily!
Then hire a coach to teach you how to NOT spam people Basically, just be real and yourself on Facebook.
Also, I would find someone who has success in the company you are in, and ask to learn from them. They can be your mentor.
11. Anything else you’d like me to know?
Dream BIG! It’s so corny – I know! But it’s true. As a kid, we were taught to dream big, and that we could become anyone we set our minds too. Then, for some reason, as we got older, society is like ‘haha just kidding! No, you can’t. Just fit in this box please.’ The Top 1% in the world, the ones making a massive impact, are the ones that chose to never stop dreaming bigger! They didn’t listen to the masses – but chose the path less travelled. You can too. You CAN reach whatever goal is in your heart. Then once you do, please dream even bigger!
